About radiology & imaging
Imaging is how a suspicion becomes a diagnosis. A blood test can tell you that something is wrong; a scan usually tells you what and where. Each modality answers a different question — ultrasound and MRI are best for soft tissue, CT is fastest and best for the chest, abdomen and complex fractures, and plain X-ray remains the right first look at bone and lungs.
Every study here is reported by a qualified radiologist. That distinction matters more than it sounds: a scan is only as useful as its reading, and a set of images with no report simply shifts the work onto whoever you show them to next.
Because the laboratory is in the same building, a work-up needing both blood tests and a scan is usually one visit rather than two trips to two providers.
When your doctor sends you here
- Pain, swelling or an injury that has not settled
- An abnormal blood result that needs a look at the organ itself
- Headaches, back pain or a joint problem being investigated
- Routine screening — a mammogram, or bone density after 50
- Following up a previous scan to see whether anything has changed
How to prepare
- Bring any previous scans and reports. A comparison is often what makes the reading conclusive.
- Some studies need fasting or a full bladder. The page for your scan says which, and we confirm when you book.
- Tell us before a contrast study if you are pregnant, have kidney problems, or have ever reacted to contrast.
- For an MRI, leave jewellery at home and wear something without metal fasteners. Tell us about any implant, pacemaker or metal fragment before you book.

Common questions
Is the radiation dose safe?
Ultrasound and MRI use no ionising radiation at all. X-ray, CT, mammography and DEXA do, in doses kept as low as the image allows — a DEXA scan is a fraction of a chest film. The dose from a clinically justified scan is small next to the risk of leaving the question unanswered, which is why we ask what your doctor is looking for.
When do I get the images and the report?
Turnaround is stated on each scan's page, and most are same day to 48 hours. The report is what your doctor needs; the images come with it.
Can I have a scan without an appointment?
The centre is open 24 hours and no appointment is needed for walk-in services, but a scan needs a particular machine and technologist. Call ahead and we will tell you when that room is staffed rather than have you travel and wait.
