About dental imaging
Most dental work needs an image before it starts, and the two studies here answer different questions. An OPG is a single panoramic image taken as the arm rotates around your head — both jaws, all the teeth, the sinuses and the jaw joints in one view. It is what a dentist wants before extractions, before orthodontics, and for a general assessment of what is happening below the gum line.
Cone beam CT gives a three-dimensional reconstruction of the jaw at a fraction of the dose of a medical CT. That is what implant placement is planned on, because it shows exactly where the bone is thick enough and where the nerve canal runs. It also resolves root canal anatomy that a flat image cannot.
Both take a minute or less. Bring the referral from your dentist if you have one, and we will send the images and the report to whoever is doing the work.

How to prepare
- No fasting and no preparation. You will be asked to remove earrings, glasses, hairclips and any removable dental appliance.
- You stand still for under a minute while the arm rotates around your head. Nothing touches your teeth.
- Bring the referral slip if your dentist gave you one, and tell us where the report should be sent.
- Tell us if you are or might be pregnant before any dental X-ray.

What is the difference between an OPG and a cone beam CT?
An OPG is a single flat panoramic image of both jaws — quick, low dose, and enough for most purposes. Cone beam CT builds a 3D reconstruction, which is what you need when depth matters: implant planning, an impacted tooth, or root anatomy a flat image cannot separate.
How much radiation is involved?
An OPG is a very low dose, comparable to a few days of ordinary background radiation. Cone beam CT is higher than an OPG but a fraction of a medical CT of the head. Both are used only where the image will change what happens next.
Can I come without a dentist's referral?
Yes. You can walk in and ask for either study directly, and we will give you the images and the report to take to whoever is treating you.
