About this test
Renin is released by the kidney when it senses low blood flow, and it sets off the chain that ends in aldosterone. Measuring it alongside aldosterone separates an adrenal cause of high blood pressure from a kidney one, which is what decides whether surgery is on the table.
What it measures
- Plasma renin activity or concentration
A note on results. A single test is one part of a clinical picture, not a diagnosis. Discuss your report with a qualified doctor, who will read it alongside your history and examination.
