About this test
Prolactin is the hormone that drives milk production. Raised levels outside pregnancy and breastfeeding can disrupt periods and ovulation in women and lower testosterone in men. Because prolactin rises with stress and sleep, the sample is best taken a few hours after waking and while relaxed.
