About this test
TPHA is specific to treponemal infection and stays positive for life, so it confirms exposure but does not by itself indicate active disease — VDRL or RPR titres are used for that and for following treatment. Screening is routine in pregnancy, because syphilis is transmissible to the baby and entirely treatable.
