About this test

In someone with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis, AFP is used with ultrasound to watch for liver cancer. It is separately raised in testicular and ovarian germ-cell tumours, and it forms part of the antenatal screen, where the reference range is entirely different.

What it measures

  • Serum alpha-fetoprotein

A note on results. A single test is one part of a clinical picture, not a diagnosis. Discuss your report with a qualified doctor, who will read it alongside your history and examination.
