About this test
Ferritin is the protein that stores iron. It falls before haemoglobin does, so it catches iron deficiency at a stage where you may feel tired and breathless but a standard CBC still looks normal. It is particularly useful for women with heavy periods and during pregnancy.
What it measures
- Serum ferritin
A note on results. A single test is one part of a clinical picture, not a diagnosis. Discuss your report with a qualified doctor, who will read it alongside your history and examination.
