About this test

The analyser counts cells; the smear shows what they look like. Shape, size and inclusions distinguish the causes of anaemia from one another, reveal malaria parasites, and pick up the abnormal cells of leukaemia that a count alone can miss.

What it measures

  • Red cell size, shape and colour
  • White cell morphology and any abnormal forms
  • Platelet number and appearance on film

A note on results. A single test is one part of a clinical picture, not a diagnosis. Discuss your report with a qualified doctor, who will read it alongside your history and examination.
