About this test
HbA1c measures how much sugar has attached to your red blood cells. Because those cells live around three months, the result reflects your average blood glucose across that whole period rather than the single moment you gave the sample. That makes it the standard test both for diagnosing diabetes and for judging whether treatment is working, and it needs no fasting at all.
What it measures
- Glycated haemoglobin percentage
- Estimated average glucose (eAG)
A note on results. A single test is one part of a clinical picture, not a diagnosis. Discuss your report with a qualified doctor, who will read it alongside your history and examination.
