About this test

Separates the haemoglobin types present and quantifies each. A raised HbA2 identifies beta-thalassaemia trait, which matters enormously here: two carriers have a one-in-four chance of a child with thalassaemia major, so it is the standard test before marriage and in pregnancy where the blood count suggests a carrier state.

What it measures

  • HbA, HbA2 and HbF percentages
  • Any abnormal variant such as HbS, HbD or HbE

A note on results. A single test is one part of a clinical picture, not a diagnosis. Discuss your report with a qualified doctor, who will read it alongside your history and examination.
