About this test
Electrolytes control fluid balance, nerve signalling and heart rhythm. They are checked after vomiting or diarrhoea, in anyone on diuretics or blood pressure medication, and in kidney disease. Potassium in particular needs to stay within a narrow range because both high and low levels affect the heart.
