About this test

Electrodes on the scalp record the brain's rhythms while awake and, where possible, drowsy. EEG supports an epilepsy diagnosis and helps classify the seizure type, which guides drug choice. A normal EEG does not exclude epilepsy — the diagnosis remains a clinical one.

What it measures

  • Background rhythm and symmetry
  • Epileptiform discharges and their location
  • Response to hyperventilation and photic stimulation

A note on results. A single test is one part of a clinical picture, not a diagnosis. Discuss your report with a qualified doctor, who will read it alongside your history and examination.
