About this test
Vitamin B12 is needed to make red blood cells and to maintain the sheath around your nerves. Deficiency is common in vegetarian diets, after certain stomach surgery, and with long-term use of some diabetes and acid-reducing medicines. Because the nerve damage can become permanent, it is worth checking early when there is unexplained tingling or numbness.
What it measures
- Serum vitamin B12
A note on results. A single test is one part of a clinical picture, not a diagnosis. Discuss your report with a qualified doctor, who will read it alongside your history and examination.
