About this test
ESR measures how quickly red cells settle in a tube. Inflammation makes them settle faster. It does not say where the problem is, but a persistently raised ESR points towards chronic infection, autoimmune disease or, occasionally, malignancy, and it is often used alongside CRP to follow how a known condition is responding.
What it measures
- Erythrocyte sedimentation rate
A note on results. A single test is one part of a clinical picture, not a diagnosis. Discuss your report with a qualified doctor, who will read it alongside your history and examination.
