About this test
A Complete Blood Count measures the three cell types in your blood: red cells that carry oxygen, white cells that fight infection, and platelets that help you clot. It is the most commonly ordered test in medicine because an abnormal result narrows down a very wide range of possibilities quickly. No fasting is needed and results are available the same day.
What it measures
- Haemoglobin and red cell count, the main markers for anaemia
- White cell count and differential, raised in most infections
- Platelet count, showing how well your blood clots
- Red cell indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC), which identify the type of anaemia
