About this test

Calprotectin is released by white cells into the gut when the bowel wall is inflamed. A low result in someone with chronic bowel symptoms makes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis unlikely and can avoid a colonoscopy; a high one makes the case for looking.

What it measures

  • Faecal calprotectin concentration

A note on results. A single test is one part of a clinical picture, not a diagnosis. Discuss your report with a qualified doctor, who will read it alongside your history and examination.
